Just last week, when my friends and I were working on a project for a class, we got to talking about what a lot of gamers today are looking at video games. We all agreed that gamers are thinking a lot about the graphics and overlooking gameplay and storyline. The interesting thing about this talk was when I got home and went on messenger. As I was talking to my other friends about random things, I noticed that one of them had something that caught my attention quite fast. The thing I noticed was an “equation” on what most of my friends would agree on in terms of defining video game quality. The “equation” when like this:
(Storyline >= Gameplay) > Graphics
This brings up something that I’ve noticed in quite a number of games out there. Many companies are using graphics as their major thing when they want to bring out games. I’ve had talks with people when I bring up new games and I usually hear things concerning graphics as their first question. I’ve even had friends that refuse to play a game (even though a majority of us loved the story and the gameplay) just because the game’s graphics were poor. I know it’s up to the individual to decide what they think is a good game and what is bad. Personally, since I’ve played video games almost my entire life, I think its crucial that others understand that gaming has change over the years but I strongly emphasize to newer and even casual gamers that the above equation is something we want to experience when we play.
